Medieval India

Pahi-kasht (पाहीकाश्त)

English

Non-resident itinerant peasants who cultivated land in villages other than their home village on a contractual tenancy basis.

Historical background

Pahi-kasht cultivators occupied a more precarious economic position than khud-kasht peasants, without the same secure customary claim to land — historians studying medieval Indian rural labour mobility use records of pahi-kasht movement between villages as evidence of a genuinely more fluid, less rigidly localised peasant labour market than sometimes assumed.
