Revivalism (पुनःपरिवर्तनवाद)

English

Period19th Century Socio-Religious Reform Exam importanceMedium

A strand within 19th-century socio-religious reform movements that sought renewal by returning to what were held to be the “pure,” original forms of Hindu (or other) religious traditions — e.g. the Arya Samaj’s call to return to Vedic religion — distinct from purely reformist or Westernising currents.

Understand it like this

Revivalist and purely reformist impulses often coexisted uneasily within the SAME movement — the Arya Samaj, for instance, combined genuinely progressive social reform (opposing child marriage, promoting widow remarriage and women's education) with a revivalist insistence on Vedic infallibility and, through its Shuddhi movement, active religious reconversion — a combination historians use to complicate any simple "reform vs. revival" binary.

How does NET distinguish Revivalism from purely reformist movements?

Revivalism specifically seeks a RETURN to what's held as the pure, original tradition, like the Arya Samaj's call to Vedic religion; purely reformist or Westernising currents instead seek to CHANGE tradition toward new norms. NET tests whether a described movement looks backward to restore or forward to reform.
