Modern India

Oriental Despotism (प्राच्य निरकुंशतावाद)

English

PeriodColonial Historiography Exam importanceHigh

A colonial-era Western theoretical construct (associated with thinkers from Montesquieu to Karl Marx’s “Asiatic Mode of Production”) portraying Asian societies as historically ruled by all-powerful, unchecked despots over a passive, propertyless peasantry — used to justify colonial rule as a “civilising” corrective.

Understand it like this

The theory served a clear colonial-ideological function: if Indian civilisation had always been ruled by unchecked despots incapable of property rights or rational government, British colonial rule could be framed as a rescuing, modernising force rather than conquest — Edward Said's later concept of "Orientalism" (1978) built directly on critiquing this and related colonial knowledge-constructs as tools of domination, not neutral scholarship.
