An urban assembly or specialized guild council of merchants regulating markets, trade taxes, and urban commerce in South Indian towns.
Historical background
Nagaram assemblies illustrate that Chola-era urban centres had their own distinct institutional life separate from purely agrarian nadu administration, and their role in regulating trade and markets makes them an important, if understudied, source for reconstructing the commercial economy of early medieval South India.
