An organized corporation or guild of craft-artisans or merchants possessing judicial, economic, and administrative autonomy over its members.
Historical background
Srenis' recognised legal and judicial autonomy — the state generally respected a sreni's own internal rules and dispute-resolution mechanisms — is cited by legal historians as an early example of what would today be called self-regulation, distinguishing ancient Indian guild law from the more state-controlled craft regulation seen in some other ancient economies.
