A village headman or agrarian landed authority in the Delhi Sultanate who collected land revenue on behalf of the central state.
Historical background
Alauddin Khalji's aggressive fiscal reforms specifically targeted the khut and chaudhary's traditional exemptions and privileges, forcing them to pay the same taxes as ordinary cultivators — a policy historians read as a deliberate attempt to break the independent power base of rural intermediary elites and strengthen direct state control over agrarian revenue.
