Historical background
Hermeneutics as a formal discipline originated in the interpretation of religious and legal texts before being adapted more broadly to historical method, and its core insight — that understanding a text requires attention to both its parts and its whole, in a continuous interpretive back-and-forth — remains foundational to how historians read primary sources critically.
