Historical background
Fana is one of the most philosophically demanding concepts in Sufi thought, and its language of self-annihilation drew both admiration and suspicion from orthodox theologians — some later Sufi thinkers developed the complementary concept of baqa (subsistence in God after fana) partly to address concerns that fana alone implied a heretical dissolution of individual religious responsibility.
