Historical background
Sir Syed Ahmed Khan's emphasis on Western scientific education, controversial among some contemporary Muslim scholars who saw it as a departure from tradition, is now widely credited by historians with shaping a generation of Muslim professionals and reformers, and Aligarh Muslim University (which grew from his original college) remains a major institution today.
