Dastur (दस्तूर)

English

PeriodMughal Period (Akbar) Exam importanceMedium

The standard schedule of crop-wise revenue rates for a given Pargana under Akbar’s Zabti/Dahsala revenue system — the fixed local benchmark against which actual assessment (Jama) was calculated.

Understand it like this

Dastur rates were fixed based on average yields over the preceding decade (as part of the broader Ain-i-Dashsalah system) and varied by crop and by Pargana, reflecting real local agricultural conditions rather than a single empire-wide flat rate — this localised precision is what historians point to as the technical sophistication of Akbar's revenue administration compared to earlier, cruder systems.

This comes up a lot in the exam
