Pargana (परगना)

English

PeriodMughal Period Exam importanceHigh

A Mughal-era administrative sub-division of a Sarkar (district), itself made up of several villages, headed by revenue officials such as the Shiqdar, Amil and Qanungo — the basic building block of Mughal provincial administration.

Understand it like this

The administrative hierarchy ran Suba (province) > Sarkar (district) > Pargana > village — a Pargana's own officials (the Shiqdar for law and order, the Amil/Amalguzar for revenue, the Qanungo keeping customary records, and the Patwari at village level) gave the Mughal state a remarkably deep and standardised bureaucratic reach into local society for a pre-modern empire.

How does UGC NET actually test Pargana, beyond the bare definition?

Rarely as a standalone definition question — almost always as part of the Mughal administrative hierarchy (Suba u2192 Sarkar u2192 Pargana u2192 village), usually in a match-the-following format testing whether you can correctly place officials at the right level. The Shiqdar, Amil and Qanungo belong at the Pargana level; the Faujdar and Diwan sit one level up at the Sarkar. Mixing up which official belongs at which tier is the single most common trap in these questions.

There's more to this than one term
