Modern India

Charter Act of 1833 (चार्टर अधिनियम, 1833)

English

Legislation that completely ended the East India Company’s commercial activities, designating the Governor-General of Bengal as Governor-General of India.

Historical background

By ending the East India Company's remaining commercial functions entirely and formally centralising legislative authority in the Governor-General, the Charter Act of 1833 marked a genuine shift in the Company's character — from primarily a trading enterprise toward primarily a governing authority, a transition completed by the Crown's direct takeover after 1858.
