A land revenue assessment system based on actual crop division between state and cultivator after harvest (Ghalla-Bakshi).
Historical background
Batai's reliance on physical crop division rather than a fixed monetary assessment made it comparatively favourable to cultivators during poor harvests (since the state's share fell along with the actual yield) — one reason historians see a shift away from batai toward more fixed cash-based systems like zabt as, in part, a shift of harvest risk from the state onto the peasantry.

स्थिर मौद्रिक निर्धारण के बजाय भौतिक फ़सल-विभाजन पर बटाई की निर्भरता इसे ख़राब फ़सल के वर्षों में कृषकों हेतु अपेक्षाकृत अनुकूल बनाती थी — यही एक कारण है कि इतिहासकार बटाई से ज़ब्त जैसी अधिक स्थिर नक़द-आधारित व्यवस्थाओं की ओर बदलाव को आंशिक रूप से फ़सल-जोखिम के राज्य से किसान वर्ग की ओर स्थानांतरण के रूप में देखते हैं।
