Historical background
The Cripps Mission's failure, coming at a genuinely dangerous moment in the war (Japanese forces had just taken Singapore and Burma), directly preceded the Quit India Movement later that same year — historians often read the sequence as evidence that incremental constitutional offers had lost their ability to satisfy nationalist demands by this stage of the war.
