Historical background
Kangra painting flourished particularly under the patronage of Raja Sansar Chand in the late eighteenth century, and its lyrical depictions of Radha-Krishna romance drew heavily on Vaishnava devotional poetry — making the school's paintings visual expressions of the same devotional themes found in contemporary Bhakti movement literature.
