Historical background
The base-superstructure model has been subject to extensive debate even within Marxist historiography itself — some later Marxist historians treat the relationship as more reciprocal and less mechanically deterministic than a strict reading of Marx's own formulation might suggest, a genuine internal debate students of historiography should be aware exists.
