Historical background
Burzahom is exceptional among South Asian Neolithic sites for its pit-dwellings (semi-subterranean houses dug into loess soil) and for the practice of burying domestic animals, especially dogs, alongside their owners — a custom with few close parallels elsewhere in the subcontinent and one that continues to draw archaeological attention to Kashmir's distinct Neolithic trajectory compared to the Indus plains.
