Historical background
Knowledge of categories like this comes almost entirely from Sangam-era anthologies composed by court poets describing the chieftains and warrior-elites they depended on for patronage. Such terms therefore preserve not just administrative vocabulary but the social self-image of early Tamil aristocracy — still being actively mapped through ongoing epigraphic and literary research.
