The amalaka's name derives from the amla (Indian gooseberry) fruit its ribbed, segmented shape resembles, and its structural role — capping the shikhara and supporting the kalasha — makes it one of the most reliable diagnostic features art historians use to identify Nagara-style temple architecture at a glance, distinguishing it immediately from the very differently structured Dravida vimana.
