Henry Derozio's Young Bengal followers were genuinely radical for their time — publicly rejecting orthodox Hindu customs, advocating rationalism and free enquiry — and while the movement's direct organisational influence was fairly short-lived, historians of the Bengal Renaissance treat it as an important early current within the broader nineteenth-century Bengali intellectual reform movement.
