Mughal miniature painting developed through direct royal patronage, with successive emperors (particularly Akbar, Jahangir, and Shah Jahan) maintaining dedicated imperial painting studios (karkhanas) employing dozens of specialist artists — making it one of the most systematically documented painting traditions in pre-modern Indian art history.
