A diplomatic system used by Lord Wellesley requiring Indian rulers to maintain British troops, pay subsidies, and accept a British Resident.
Historical background
Lord Wellesley's Subsidiary Alliance system dramatically expanded British influence across India with comparatively little direct military conquest — rulers who accepted subsidiary alliance status effectively surrendered their independent foreign policy and much of their military capacity while nominally retaining internal sovereignty, one of the most effective tools of indirect British expansion in this period.
