Historical background
The doctrine of paramountcy gave the British Crown enormous, deliberately vaguely-defined authority over princely states without requiring full territorial annexation — a flexible tool of indirect control historians see as central to how British India actually governed roughly two-fifths of the subcontinent's territory through nominally 'independent' princely rulers.
