Ancient India

Stridhana (स्त्रीधन)

English

PeriodClassical to Medieval Period Exam importanceHigh

Property legally recognised as belonging exclusively to a woman — gifts received at marriage, from parents, or earned by her own effort — over which, per classical Hindu law texts, she alone held rights of disposal.

Understand it like this

Classical texts like the Manusmriti and later commentaries (e.g. the Mitakshara and Dayabhaga schools) recognised several categories of Stridhana with different rules of inheritance — a rare area where women held clearer, more independent property rights than in most other domains of classical Hindu law, making it a frequently cited counterpoint in questions about the status of women in ancient India.

कालClassical to Medieval Period परीक्षा महत्वउच्च

This comes up a lot in the exam
