Polygars (पोलिगर)

English

PeriodVijayanagara Successor States; Polygar Wars 1799–1805 Exam importanceMedium

Anglicised term (from Telugu/Tamil Palaiyakkarar) for local chieftains/military governors of the Vijayanagara-successor Nayaka states in South India, who held Amaram-type land tenures and later resisted early British expansion in the Carnatic (the Polygar Wars).

Understand it like this

The Polygar system emerged from the fragmentation of Vijayanagara authority after the 1565 Battle of Talikota, as local Nayaka-appointed military chiefs increasingly acted as autonomous rulers — the Polygar Wars (1799-1805) against the early British East India Company, especially the resistance of figures like Veerapandiya Kattabomman, are studied as an important early instance of armed anti-colonial resistance predating 1857.
