Historical background
The ideal of historical objectivity, closely associated with the Rankean tradition, has been extensively critiqued by postmodern and other later historiographical schools, which argue that a historian's own social position and language inevitably shape historical writing — objectivity today is more often discussed as an aspiration than a fully achievable state.
