Numismatics (मुद्राशास्त्र)

English

PeriodAuxiliary Sciences Exam importanceHigh

The scientific study and systematic analysis of coins, paper currency, and metallic tokens.

Understand it like this

Numismatic evidence is particularly valuable for periods and regions with sparse literary sources, since coin inscriptions and metal content can independently corroborate or challenge chronologies derived from other evidence — coin hoards in particular have been crucial for reconstructing post-Mauryan Indian political geography.

How does NET separate Numismatics from Epigraphy when a coin has an inscription?

If the question centres on the coin as an object — metal content, weight, minting — it's Numismatics; if it centres on deciphering the inscribed text on it, it overlaps into Epigraphy. NET sometimes deliberately uses a coin example to test whether you can identify which discipline the specific question is actually testing.
