The North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, a military alliance formed in 1949 by the United States, Canada, and Western European nations for collective defence against Soviet expansion during the Cold War.
Understand it like this
NATO's founding Article 5 — an attack on one member is treated as an attack on all — is the alliance's defining feature and the single most commonly tested detail about it; the Soviet-led counterpart alliance formed in response, the Warsaw Pact (1955), is worth knowing as the direct Cold War counterpoint to NATO.
