Mansab (मंसब)
English
The numerical rank/grade held by a Mughal official or noble (Mansabdar) under the Mansabdari system, expressed as Zat (personal status/pay) and Sawar (cavalry to be maintained) — the organising principle of the entire Mughal nobility and military.
Understand it like this
A crucial feature historians emphasise is that Mansab was a PERSONAL rank tied to the individual, not hereditary or attached to a specific territory — a Mansabdar's Zat and Sawar numbers could rise or fall with imperial favour, giving the emperor significant control over the nobility, though by Aurangzeb's reign the sheer number of Mansabdars competing for limited Jagirs (the "Jagirdari Crisis") strained the system badly.
