Historical background
Ghatikas functioned as something between a monastic school and a proto-university, and inscriptional references to the Kanchipuram ghatika under the Pallavas suggest it attracted students from across South India — an early example of an institution of higher learning with a reputation extending well beyond its immediate locality.
