Economic Drain (आर्थिक अपवहन)
English
Dadabhai Naoroji’s theory (in Poverty and Un-British Rule in India) that Britain systematically extracted India’s wealth without adequate return — through unrequited exports, “Home Charges,” and salaries repatriated by British officials — a foundational plank of early economic nationalism.
Understand it like this
Naoroji's Drain Theory became the founding methodology of the "Nationalist School" of economic historiography — later scholars like R. C. Dutt built on it, and it remains contested territory: some economic historians argue the Drain figures were methodologically overstated, while most nationalist and many later historians still treat it as broadly capturing a real, structural transfer of resources from colony to metropole.
