Colonialism (उपनिवेशवाद)

English

Periodc. 1757–1947 Exam importanceHigh

The system of political and economic domination in which one country establishes control over another territory and its people, typically for resource extraction and market control — in the Indian context, distinguished by historians from earlier pre-colonial conquest by its integration into a global capitalist economy.

Understand it like this

A key historiographical debate is periodisation: was British rule "colonial" from Plassey (1757) onward, or only once industrial capitalism and full territorial control matured (from roughly 1813, when the Company's trade monopoly ended, or 1858, when Crown rule began)? Historians like Bipan Chandra distinguish phases (Mercantilist, Free Trade/Industrial, Finance Capital) within the single broad category of colonialism, each with a different dominant economic logic.

How does NET distinguish Colonialism from earlier pre-colonial conquest historically?

By its integration into a GLOBAL CAPITALIST ECONOMY specifically — NET tests recognising this as the feature historians use to separate colonial-era domination from earlier conquest and empire-building, not treating all foreign rule as equivalently "colonial."
