Historical background
The Chaurapanchasika style takes its name from an illustrated manuscript of a Sanskrit poem of the same name, and its angular figures and flat, vividly-coloured backgrounds represent one of the last major indigenous Indian painting traditions before Mughal miniature painting began reshaping Indian court painting conventions from the sixteenth century onward.
