Ancient India

Brahmadeya (ब्रह्मदेय)

English

Land or entire villages gifted to Brahmins, exempt from tax payments, aimed at expanding agrarian frontiers and establishing ideological hegemony.

Historical background

Brahmadeya villages often became centres of literacy, temple-building, and local political influence, and their spread is closely studied as a marker of state penetration into new agricultural frontiers. In South India particularly, brahmadeya settlements are frequently linked in inscriptions to irrigation works, suggesting the grants doubled as a mechanism for agrarian expansion, not just religious patronage.
