Bodhisattva (बोधिसत्त्व)

English

PeriodMahayana Buddhism (Kushana Period Onward) Exam importanceHigh

In Mahayana Buddhism, a being who has attained the qualification for Nirvana but voluntarily delays it out of compassion, remaining in the world to help other beings attain liberation — a central devotional figure in Mahayana art and iconography (e.g. Avalokiteshvara).

Understand it like this

The Bodhisattva ideal is the defining doctrinal difference between Mahayana and earlier Theravada Buddhism: Theravada emphasises individual liberation (Arhatship), while Mahayana holds up the Bodhisattva's compassionate delay of Nirvana as the higher ideal — a shift that also drove Mahayana's rich devotional art (Gandhara and Mathura sculpture) depicting Bodhisattvas like Avalokiteshvara and Maitreya as objects of worship in their own right.
