Arabesque patterns developed partly as a response to Islamic artistic conventions discouraging figural representation in religious contexts, channelling decorative energy instead into intricate geometric and vegetal patterns — a stylistic solution that produced some of the most technically sophisticated surface ornamentation in Indo-Islamic architecture, seen extensively at sites like Fatehpur Sikri and the Taj Mahal.
