Historical background
The abhaya mudra is among the earliest and most widely used gestures across Buddhist, Hindu, and Jain iconography alike, and its consistent appearance from Gandhara and Mathura sculpture through much later temple imagery makes it one of the more useful cross-tradition visual markers art historians use to identify a figure's protective or benevolent role.
