Tarafdar (तरफ़दार)

English

PeriodBahmani Sultanate Exam importanceMedium

The provincial governor or military warden overseeing a territorial province (Taraff) in the Bahmani Sultanate.

Understand it like this

The Bahmani Sultanate's tarafdar-governed provincial structure eventually proved a source of centrifugal weakness rather than strength — as individual tarafdars accumulated regional power, several eventually broke away entirely, founding the successor Deccan Sultanates (Bijapur, Golconda, Ahmadnagar, Bidar, Berar) that divided Bahmani territory among themselves in the early sixteenth century.

How does NET connect Tarafdar to the Iqta-based provincial system?

As a GOVERNOR-level official administering a Taraf (province/division) under the Sultanate, functionally parallel to an Iqta-holder — NET tests recognising this provincial-governance role within the same broader territorial-assignment framework as Iqta and Muqti.
