Samskaras (संस्कार)

English

PeriodVedic to Classical Period Exam importanceMedium

The prescribed life-cycle sacraments/rites of passage in Brahmanical tradition — traditionally sixteen (Shodasha Samskara) — marking stages from conception (Garbhadhana) through initiation (Upanayana) to funeral rites (Antyeshti).

Understand it like this

While sixteen is the canonical number, different Dharmashastra texts list them with some variation, and only a subset (Upanayana, Vivaha/marriage, Antyeshti/funeral) were universally and rigorously observed across all varnas in practice. The Samskaras are a useful example for exam answers of the gap between prescriptive textual ideals and the more variable lived religious practice historians infer from other evidence.

कालVedic to Classical Period परीक्षा महत्वमध्यम
