Historical background
Cyril Radcliffe's boundary commission worked with genuinely limited time, imperfect and outdated maps, and no prior experience of the region, and the resulting division of Punjab and Bengal — cutting directly through communities, agricultural land, and infrastructure — is widely identified by historians as a significant contributing factor to the massive scale of displacement and violence during Partition.
