Hero stones (Viragal) typically depict the deceased's heroic death scene and sometimes their ascent to a heavenly abode, while Sati stones commemorate women who died on their husband's funeral pyre — together they form a valuable, geographically dispersed non-textual source base historians use to study regional social values, warfare, and gender in early medieval India, especially in areas with sparse literary sources.
