Historical background
The dual civil-military character of this office — combining supreme judicial authority with top military command — is often cited as characteristic of Gupta administration's relatively fluid boundaries between civil and military roles, in contrast to the more specialised departmental separation seen in the earlier Mauryan Arthashastra model.
