English

(Cire perdue) A metal casting technique where a molten bronze sculpture is formed using a wax model matrix, seen in the Harappan Dancing Girl.

Historical background

The Mohenjo-daro 'Dancing Girl' figurine, made using this technique, is often held up as evidence that Harappan artisans had achieved a level of bronze-casting sophistication not clearly matched again in the subcontinent until the later, more famous Chola bronzes nearly two thousand years afterward — making the technique a rare thread of technical continuity across a very long span of Indian art history.
