A 1950–1953 conflict between communist North Korea (backed by China and the USSR) and South Korea (backed by the US and UN forces), ending in an armistice that left Korea divided along roughly its original border.
Understand it like this
The Korean War is sometimes called the first 'hot' proxy war of the Cold War, and its stalemate outcome — Korea remains divided along a similar line to this day — is a useful contrast against the Vietnam War, where a clearer, if not American-favoured, resolution eventually occurred.
