Jaziya (जज़िया)
English
A per-capita tax levied on non-Muslim subjects (dhimmis) under Islamic law in lieu of military service, imposed intermittently by Delhi Sultanate and Mughal rulers — abolished by Akbar as part of Sulah-i-kul, later notoriously reimposed by Aurangzeb in 1679.
Understand it like this
Aurangzeb's 1679 reimposition of jaziya, after roughly a century of abolition under Akbar, is one of the most debated single policy decisions in Mughal historiography — colonial-era historians often read it as proof of religious bigotry driving Mughal decline, while many later historians argue it should be read primarily as a fiscal measure amid the costly, prolonged Deccan wars, with religious framing layered on top.
