A territorial state/kingdom of early historic North India, literally “where a tribe (jana) sets its foot” — the political unit that preceded and gave rise to the larger Mahajanapadas of the 6th century BCE.

The shift from scattered Janapadas to sixteen large, consolidated Mahajanapadas by the 6th century BCE is treated by historians as a key indicator of state formation and the Second Urbanisation — driven by iron technology enabling forest clearance and intensive agriculture, which in turn supported larger populations, standing armies, and more complex administration.
