Historical background
The feitoria system's combination of trading post, warehouse, and often a small fortified garrison established a template for European commercial presence in Asia that outlasted Portuguese dominance itself — later Dutch, French, and English trading companies built broadly similar fortified coastal trading-post networks along the Indian coastline.
