Dasa (दास)

A term for a servant or bonded/unfree labourer in ancient and medieval Indian society (from the Vedic Dasa-Dasyu opposition through to medieval agrarian bondage) — an important category for understanding social stratification below the peasantry.

The term's meaning shifted significantly over time: in the Rig Veda, "Dasa" often refers to a rival ethnic/tribal group opposed to the Aryans (sometimes read as indigenous populations); by later Vedic and classical texts, its meaning narrowed toward "servant/slave" in a social-economic sense — a semantic shift historians use carefully as evidence of changing Aryan-indigenous relations and social stratification over the Vedic period.
