Dandaniti (दंडनीति)

Literally “the policy/science of punishment” — the ancient Indian discipline of statecraft and coercive state authority, treated by Kautilya’s Arthashastra as the instrument that upholds Dharma and prevents matsyanyaya (the “law of the fish,” i.e. anarchy).
Understand it like this
Kautilya makes Dandaniti the foundation of all four other traditional sciences (Anvikshiki/philosophy, Trayi/the Vedas, Varta/economics) — arguing that without effective coercive authority to maintain order, none of the others can flourish. This places the Arthashastra's political theory closer to realist statecraft than to the more idealised Dharma-centred kingship of earlier Dharmashastra texts, a contrast examiners like to test.
