Baluta (बलूता)

English

PeriodMaratha Period Exam importanceMedium

The traditional Maratha village system of hereditary service-payment in kind, under which twelve village artisan/service castes (the Balutedars — carpenter, blacksmith, barber, etc.) received a fixed share of the harvest in return for their services to the community.

Understand it like this

The Balutedari system is often studied alongside the North Indian Jajmani system as a comparable form of caste-based, non-monetised village service-exchange — historians use it to illustrate how much of the pre-colonial rural economy operated on customary, in-kind obligation networks rather than a cash market, and how colonial monetisation later disrupted these arrangements.

What's the exact structure NET tests for the Baluta system?

That exactly TWELVE hereditary village artisan/service castes, the Balutedars, received a FIXED harvest share for their services — NET tests this specific number and payment-in-kind structure, not just 'the Maratha village economy' generally.

This comes up a lot in the exam
